What is a panic attack?
A panic attack is an episode characterized by an overwhelming feeling of anxiety or terror without being in any real danger. If this happens more than once in a relatively short period, your panic attacks may be symptoms of an anxiety disorder.
Symptoms of a panic attack include:
- Pounding heartbeat
- Sweating
- Trembling or shaking
- Shortness of breath
- A choking feeling
- Chest pain
- Nausea or stomach pains
- Dizziness
- Chills or hot flashes
If you’re experiencing four or more of these symptoms, you’re having a panic attack. Panic attacks usually last about 5-10 minutes but can sometimes go on for hours. Many people describe panic attacks as a feeling of having a heart attack or stroke.
If panic attacks go untreated, some people develop a condition called agoraphobia, an intense fear of being out in public.
How are panic attacks diagnosed?
When you come to Kee Essentials, your psychiatric provider begins by taking your medical history and consulting with you about your symptoms. They ask specific questions about your family history because if your parents suffer from panic attacks, it is likely that you’ll experience them, too.
How are panic disorders treated?
Panic disorders are treated with a combination of lifestyle changes, cognitive behavioral therapy, and medication.
Lifestyle changes, such as cutting back on caffeine, exercising more often, and
performing deep breathing exercises can help quite a bit.
